A new structure is designed and fused with sensitivity to the historic shell of the former Mission Park Congregational Church.

This ambitious adaptive reuse project entailed the conversion and seismic retrofit of an existing wood-framed and unreinforced brick masonry church to a modern school with multipurpose and flexible teaching spaces. The work of the design team comprised the preservation of an historic exterior and interior sanctuary, including a wood-framed gabled roof, decorative ceilings, and other finishes. New elements were sensitively designed to minimize their impact on the historic fabric.

The structural scope included the complete reconstruction of an existing floor and roof with new steel framing and concrete shear walls to meet new code standards. Sustainable design goals dictated the integration of systems with natural ventilation and lighting. Tipping worked closely with the owner, architect, and contractor from prepurchase consultation and feasibility studies to concept designs and construction plans; we created detailed 3D structural models to facilitate coordination.
